A BIT MORE ABOUT BETTY LAWRENCE

By

Ronald Hearn

One example of Betty’s brilliance on the piano was the two-woman show I directed at London's Cochrane Theatre in Kingsway.  It was well received by the audiences and after each show people approached me and asked why there was not more of Betty's solos as she not only played brilliantly but was a picture to look at.

Shakespeare wrote, "If music be the food of love, play on.  Give me excess of it." which means you cannot have too much of a good thing and Betty's music was and is a good thing.

Betty proved the point at the Chelsea Old Town Hall in London when I accompanied her to book the auditorium for a charity performance.  The manager told us there were five pianos from an upright to a concert grand, but she would have to make do with the upright as the grand was reserved for classical performances.  I explained to the manager Betty was a virtuoso performer who had her own Steinway Grand piano and had accompanied many classical stars including Richard Tauber.  He immediately agreed she should have the concert grand and invited her to try it out. Betty began to play and suddenly doors opened everywhere and many people working in the surrounding offices came into the auditorium and listened. She received thunderous applause, and would have stayed to play more if circumstances permitted.

Betty was music!
